How to read a sundial

Detail of an old clock face

A sundial tells the time by the shadow of a rod, the gnomon. It needs no winding and no battery, only a clear day.

  1. Look where the shadow falls. The number closest to the tip of the shadow is the solar time.
  2. Remember it is "solar" time. Through the year it drifts a few minutes from your wristwatch, and an hour during daylight saving time.
  3. On a cloudy day, wait. Without sun there is no shadow, and the dial simply rests.

At the Time Workshop, every participant builds a sundial and takes it home.
